A Classic Wedding in France

For those couples who plan to get married in France we can provide a Citroen DS classic car service on the day. We have two beautiful classic Citroen DS cars, both available for hire for weddings or other special occasions. The 1973 black presidential-style Citroen DS23 is a favourite with its smart black leather interior making a glamourous picture complementing any wedding day attire. Our blue 1973 Citroen DSuper5 is a little less formal while attracting the same attention associated with this classic style icon.

For your big day either of the Citroen DS wedding cars can be dressed to suit your requirements. We will collect you in your chosen Citroen DS and drive you to your wedding venue and your reception. The car will also be available to you for your wedding photos or for the tradional procession around the town that accompanies many traditional French weddings.

The cars offer sumptuous upholstery with masses of legroom accommodating even the most extravagant of gowns. Start your wedding by travelling in style and comfort with the famous magic-carpet ride of these iconic French cars. The amazing all-round visibility offers great photo opportunities for your guests and a wonderful and memorable experience for all.

We’ve been pleased to provide this service on a number of occasions this summer to couples who wanted to experience the classic French wedding with a Citroën DS as their wedding car.

Grant and Kerry came from England to get married in Sarlat in May and wanted a Citroën DS to convey Kerry and her father to the church and the bride and groom back to the chateau for the celebrations.

Charlie calls up one day and says: “how about flying down to Angoulême for a bistro lunch in the terminal restaurant?”. Most definitely!

Here’s a pictorial log of our lunchtime out – a great way to spend a memorable day at a modest cost. Thanks to Charlie’s good-hearted nature he is happy to pilot our guests staying with us at Gites in Charente for similar pleasure flights, subject to his availability and the weather, of course. A great idea for a gift flight or just a fun flight.

With lunch finished we were cleared for take off for the return to Couhé, passing from Limoges air traffic control and into Poitiers air traffic control. The headsets and microphones that we all wore made this like listening to the team radio in F1 and communication with air traffic control temporarily silenced the chatter in the plane from the rest of us.

We were cleared to descend to take photos of landmarks, in this case our gîtes and house below:

Facts and Figures:

  • Available to parties staying at Gites in Charente. Space for three passengers.
  • You need to take your passport, since the destination airport/landing strip may ask to see it.
  • Costs are only fuel …… this is about 150€ per hour ….. and lunch, about €15 each, depending on what you have!
  • How far can you go on a flight out? Couhé to Angoulême is actually only 16 minutes of flying time, but we made the most of it, overflying our respective houses and doing some aerial sightseeing. Niort is about 20 minutes, La Rochelle is about 40 minutes and Ile d’Oleron is about 50 minutes, just to give you an idea.
  • Charlie does this because he loves flying and would prefer to fly with others for company and who enjoy it with him. We bought him lunch on the day, by way of thanks.

To find out more about staying with us at here at La Ferme de l’Eglise and activities for the summer and winter visit our web site Gîtes in Charente and have a look at our blog posts. You can make an enquiry using the form on our rates and booking page or by sending an email to enquiries(at)gitesincharente(dot)co(dot)uk.

Thanks to Drew Rule and Brett Taylor for some great photography.

Zoodyssée, situated in the forest of Chizé, Deux-Sevres, is one of the largest wild animal parks in Europe dedicated to European species.

Le Grand Parc

The park is split into two areas, le Petit Parc which houses the smaller animals, a farm area (petting zoo) and a number of buildings where you can see various reptiles and behind-the-scenes work going on.  Le Grand Parc has a large European plain where you can find the large grazers: European Bison, various breeds of deer, Polish ponies.  In the surrounding woodlands around the Grand Parc, there are wild boar, Poitou mules and donkeys, Pyrenean Chamois to name but a few. La Forêt de Chizé is one of the few remaining areas of ancient forest that once covered much of France and Zoodyssée continues to work hard to preserve this environment and its native flora and fauna.

This is a lovely place to walk around, there are picnic and play areas, lovely woodland spaces with beautiful dappled shade.  A great day out for all ages.

Zoodyssée is just one of the many places to visit in Poitou-Charentes, whether it’s wildlife, the arts, churches or the beach that you are interested in.  You can discover the region for yourself and why not use Gîtes in Charente as your base for exploring a very lovely part of France. Use our booking form to make an enquiry or send an email to enquiries(at)gitesincharente(dot)co(dot)uk.

Taxe de séjour

Since 1st January 2011, the French authorities have implemented a tax on holidaymakers to help fund local regional tourist agencies. This is called Taxe de séjour and is payable by every person staying in holiday accommodation for each night of their stay. There are exemptions for children under 13 years and discounts applied to families with three or more children. The maximum tax applied to guests staying with Gîtes in Charente is 30 centimes per night and it is our legal duty to collect this tax and pass it on to the regional tourist agency, in our case Pays Mellois. The scan of their correspondence below sets out our obligations:

We will advise guests of the Taxe séjour amount due for their stay either on booking or on arrival, if preferred. By way of an example, a seven night stay for a family of five, with two children under 13 and one of 15 equals 3 x €0.30 (since under 13s are exempt) – 30% (discount for families with three children) = €4.41 for the week. The Taxe de séjour must be paid in Euros before departure.

Kiss and chips...

Saturday, 29th October, saw the second Halloween party hosted by Amanda and Dave at Le Saint Martin bar/restaurant in Brux.  We were up for a laugh but what to go as?  Amanda mentioned that our friend Brett was thinking of going as Gene Simmons, the outrageous frontman of the band Kiss.  So, after a few beers one afternoon, we decided that Brett, his wife Donna, John and I would go as the whole band!

There was a great turnout, many in costumes and a mix of French and Brits.  Music was provided by The Funkey Soul Monkeys and a loud, fantastic night was had by all.  Amanda’s fish and chips were fabulous!

Here’s a selection of some of the party-goers!

We were very pleased to win first prize for our costumes!  And thank you to Donna Taylor, I have nicked a bunch of your photos for this post!  Also, thanks to Frankie Bourne, I shamelessly grabbed your title for this post!

Le Saint Martin hosts various musical events throughout the year, along with a myriad of events happening in our region, why not contact us and see what’s going on.

If you are looking for spacious accommodation for a large party, here’s a post that tells how we provided this for a large group of friends celebrating a birthday for a week this summer.

The party gang

We had the pleasure of accommodating a large party of 16 in June who were here to celebrate Sue’s 70th birthday with a surprise party. The only person who had no idea of the plans was Sue, who right up until the last minute believed her and Kevin were holidaying in the Caribbean!

The challenge for us here was to not only keep the secret but to provide accommodation for 16 and the venue for the main event and the daily parties that went on throughout the week of the stay.

Gîtes for 16

Here at La Fèrme de l’Eglise we have La Petite Maison which can include a third double bedroom and La Grange, which has two double bedrooms and a large open plan living space which turned out to be very useful for dining space for all. So far, comfortable stabling for up to 10.

Gite in southwest France sleeps 6

Glyn and Lorna, friends in Vanzay who this year have retired from their chambres d’hôte and gîte rental business of 14 years, opened up their gîte for our party for that week. Comfortable living only 5 minutes stroll away for 4 more. Excellent – thanks Glyn and Lorna…..

We were then able to place the remaining couple with other friends nearby in Chaunay, a 6 minute drive down the road, thanks to Jeff and Annie. Everybody sorted for accommodation for the week.

Garden Space for All

The great thing about having a garden of over 1.5 acres (6338m²) is that there’s plenty of room for everybody. Amongst our collection of garden games we have a couple of boules sets and a croquet set, games that can be played by many but only really in a large space.

Catering for the Birthday Dinner Party

The courtyard to the front of the buildings was chosen as the best place for the dinner party. There is plenty of space and with the gates closed the walled courtyard feels cosy and private, as well as being conveniently close to our kitchen facilities.

We had been asked to suggest a menu and then make it happen for the table of 16…… here we are getting set up:

So, if you have a large party of friends who need accommodating then La Fèrme de l’Eglise could be perfect for your group. If your group wants us to provide a catering event then we can discuss menus and arrangements for during your stay. Find out what Kevin’s party thought about their stay with us by visiting Our Guestbook Comments page.

You can email us from the bottom of the front page of our web site www.gitesincharente.co.uk or you can book one or both gîtes by completing the online booking form.

Special thanks go to Dave and Amanda from Le Bar Saint Martin in Brux for their help with the catering and to Andy Vass for his help waiting on tables.

Angouleme Circuit des Remparts 2011 classic car racing classic car hire gites in charente

If any classic car/racing enthusiasts are looking for somewhere to stay for this year’s Circuit des Remparts, we have La Grange available from 15th September. Unfortunately some friends who were coming to take part in the rally have had to cancel this year’s trip due to work commitments.

The event runs from Friday 16th through to Sunday 18th September, starting with what seems like hundreds of classic cars being displayed throughout the streets of Angoulême, some by enthusiasts, cars being run in the rally on Saturday, and many of the cars that will be racing on Sunday.

There is the Concours d’Elégance at 8.45pm on Friday evening and race day starts at 12.30pm.  The full programme can be found on their official website.

This is a great weekend, and a fantastic opportunity to watch street racing that first started here in 1939.

Why not make a week of it, and explore the region or just relax by the pool!

Swimming Pool Gite holiday accommodation in France

Digging the hole, January 2011

If you think that you can do the excavation, think again! The geology of this area means that we have 18″ of topsoil and then straight into sandstone rock the size of billiard tables.

Gites in France with Swimming Pool

February 2011: The Swimming Pool full of the wrong water

Vanzay has a very high water table, meaning that the hole immediately filled with ground water from the bottom up. Here there is almost 1m of water and progress was delayed for 8 weeks waiting for the water table to drop. There’s little point in pumping it out, since the pumped water merely returns to the water table!

Gites with swimming pool in south west France

March 2011: Finally, work resumes, structure assembled and pouring the concrete

After the concrete had been poured the structure on which the liner hangs is now very strong. Reinforcing is used throughout, including down through the hollow panels that snap together to create the sides which are then also filled with concrete.

Heated swimming pool at gites in Poitou-Charentes

March 2011: It now looks like a swimming pool - after a fashion

Now it was a question of waiting for the concrete to go off – about 2-3 weeks. It was also time to suffer the consequences of the local geology, since in the absence of soil from the hole, 60 tonnes of calcaire was needed to backfill. You can just see the first 30 tonne delivery in the access way behind, dropped where the articulated lorry got stuck!

Gites with swimming pool in Poitou-Charentes

The reinforced concrete base to the terrace

We had a notional deadline of 1st April for the pool opening and so whilst the concrete of the pool itself was going off the base of the terrace was laid. A good deal of concrete for an 85m² terrace.

The pool liner is now in

Following the application of a screed to facilitate a very smooth finish (so as not to snag and tear the liner) the liner was fitted. This can only be done when the air temperature exceeds 16°C to ensure that the liner is pliable enough to be fitted.

Gites with swimming pool in south west France

Filling the pool

If you look very carefully you can see a single hosepipe running over the steps into the pool. We began by just using tap water, since we had read varying opinions about pumping well water to fill swimming pools. After two days of pitifully slow progress, as well as disruption to the water pressure into the house and gîtes, we employed a second hosepipe connected to the (powerful) well pump. After a further day we had a full pool, made up of about 60% mains water and 40% well water.

Gites in Charente swimming pool

April 2011: The swimming pool is almost finished

The technician arrived in the second week of April to commission the pool. This involved enabling the saltwater filtration system, the pompe à chaleur (heat pump) and demonstrating the regular maintenance and water testing/treatment steps. This photograph was taken from water level to omit the unfinished terrace and the rough surround pre-landscaping.

Large swimming pool terrace at gites in France

May 2011: The terrace is completed with 340 patio slabs

To lay 85m² of patio slabs in 27°C and direct sunshine – since forecast temperatures are taken in shade it was probably more like 35°C – is extremely hard work. Two very skilled and hard working friends helped for a total of 9 days to complete this job. Thanks to Brett, Donna and Drew. We wanted a large terrace to provide plenty of space for those who like to just sit or lie by a swimming pool in the sun.

The way to the swimming pool

Yet more calcaire was used to create the pathway……..

Landscaping around swimming pool and gites in France

June 2011: The newly seeded grass borders and finished shower point

……. to keep folk off the grass. The grass took some time to thicken due to very hot days and no rainfall. Even if there had been a hosepipe ban at this point it is permitted to freely use well water.

Gites with swimming pool in France

June 2011: Project completed.... the swimming pool is now open

That was a big undertaking and we’re glad to now just lounge on the terrace in the sunshine and take a dip when it all gets too hot!
