An old friend and me were sitting by the swimming pool last summer daydreaming about having cold beer and wine at hand, since it is a bit of a walk back to the house to refresh one’s glass. And so the idea of The Kon Tiki bar was born, something that you might be lucky enough to find on a desert island and where you could find pirates and landlubbers sharing a drink.

Kon Tiki arrives on and in Terry's '64 split screen VW bus

The Kon Tiki bar began life as an elegant summer house before having a corner cut off and metamorphosing into a pool bar. It was then built in a garden in Brighton, fitted out with the very best pirate paraphernalia, disassembled and flat packed for transport in the VW bus. Not much room in there for sleeping or eating!

Now ready for service on a bright and quite warm day in late March. We don’t allow glassware in the pool area and so all drinks are served in plastic drinkware.

The Kon Tiki bar was built for a bit of fun and to provide our friends and us with the luxury of a poolside bar. It can be open to guests staying on holiday in our gites and we keep it stocked through an honesty box – just come and ask for the key.

Special thanks go out to Terry Burke for his creative and artisan skills in the concept, design and build of The Kon Tiki bar. Architectural Salvage, Antiques and Brocantes

Here in southwest France there are many antiques and bric-à-brac outlets, some that are full time shops and others that are staged as fairs and markets throughout the summer. We made a short mention of these markets in an earlier post but haven’t reported on the less prolific architectural salvage yards. We have two located near to Gites in Charente: one on the road from Sauzé Vaussais to Melle and the other in Confolens.

If you plan to drive to this area on holiday, as many do, then you could take a little less wine home in favour of making space for some of the wonderful French architectural salvage that is not only hard to come by in England but in comparison is often much cheaper. We needed two large radiators and so made the short trip to The Reclamation Yard in Confolens, run by a couple of English guys, who were helpful and good to deal with, especially if your French isn’t so good! They specialise in huge beams and stone for building renovation but have over 50,000 square feet of covered storage (and more outside) and have an entire floor of doors, a basement of sinks and sanitary ware and mind boggling amounts of all sorts. Here are some photos taken on the visit:

I mentioned the fair prices earlier – here are the two cast iron radiators (with feet) that we bought: 6 columns with 16 sections at €80 each, as opposed to the £400 or thereabouts from English salvage yards. In fairness they need cleaning up and painting, but then that restoration work is part of the fun!

And whilst window shopping at The Reclamation Yard, we couldn’t resist spending €400 on this beautiful French double ended cast iron roll top bath:

So why not drive down to sunny southwest France, come and stay in one of our gîtes, visit the local brocantes and reclamation yards and take a piece of historic France home with you? We can provide secure parking for your van or trailer in our ample courtyard and dry barn storage for your purchases pending your return home.

A Classic Wedding in France

For those couples who plan to get married in France we can provide a Citroen DS classic car service on the day. We have two beautiful classic Citroen DS cars, both available for hire for weddings or other special occasions. The 1973 black presidential-style Citroen DS23 is a favourite with its smart black leather interior making a glamourous picture complementing any wedding day attire. Our blue 1973 Citroen DSuper5 is a little less formal while attracting the same attention associated with this classic style icon.

For your big day either of the Citroen DS wedding cars can be dressed to suit your requirements. We will collect you in your chosen Citroen DS and drive you to your wedding venue and your reception. The car will also be available to you for your wedding photos or for the tradional procession around the town that accompanies many traditional French weddings.

The cars offer sumptuous upholstery with masses of legroom accommodating even the most extravagant of gowns. Start your wedding by travelling in style and comfort with the famous magic-carpet ride of these iconic French cars. The amazing all-round visibility offers great photo opportunities for your guests and a wonderful and memorable experience for all.

We’ve been pleased to provide this service on a number of occasions this summer to couples who wanted to experience the classic French wedding with a Citroën DS as their wedding car.

Grant and Kerry came from England to get married in Sarlat in May and wanted a Citroën DS to convey Kerry and her father to the church and the bride and groom back to the chateau for the celebrations.

Charlie calls up one day and says: “how about flying down to Angoulême for a bistro lunch in the terminal restaurant?”. Most definitely!

Here’s a pictorial log of our lunchtime out – a great way to spend a memorable day at a modest cost. Thanks to Charlie’s good-hearted nature he is happy to pilot our guests staying with us at Gites in Charente for similar pleasure flights, subject to his availability and the weather, of course. A great idea for a gift flight or just a fun flight.

With lunch finished we were cleared for take off for the return to Couhé, passing from Limoges air traffic control and into Poitiers air traffic control. The headsets and microphones that we all wore made this like listening to the team radio in F1 and communication with air traffic control temporarily silenced the chatter in the plane from the rest of us.

We were cleared to descend to take photos of landmarks, in this case our gîtes and house below:

Facts and Figures:

  • Available to parties staying at Gites in Charente. Space for three passengers.
  • You need to take your passport, since the destination airport/landing strip may ask to see it.
  • Costs are only fuel …… this is about 150€ per hour ….. and lunch, about €15 each, depending on what you have!
  • How far can you go on a flight out? Couhé to Angoulême is actually only 16 minutes of flying time, but we made the most of it, overflying our respective houses and doing some aerial sightseeing. Niort is about 20 minutes, La Rochelle is about 40 minutes and Ile d’Oleron is about 50 minutes, just to give you an idea.
  • Charlie does this because he loves flying and would prefer to fly with others for company and who enjoy it with him. We bought him lunch on the day, by way of thanks.

To find out more about staying with us at here at La Ferme de l’Eglise and activities for the summer and winter visit our web site Gîtes in Charente and have a look at our blog posts. You can make an enquiry using the form on our rates and booking page or by sending an email to enquiries(at)gitesincharente(dot)co(dot)uk.

Thanks to Drew Rule and Brett Taylor for some great photography.

Zoodyssée, situated in the forest of Chizé, Deux-Sevres, is one of the largest wild animal parks in Europe dedicated to European species.

Le Grand Parc

The park is split into two areas, le Petit Parc which houses the smaller animals, a farm area (petting zoo) and a number of buildings where you can see various reptiles and behind-the-scenes work going on.  Le Grand Parc has a large European plain where you can find the large grazers: European Bison, various breeds of deer, Polish ponies.  In the surrounding woodlands around the Grand Parc, there are wild boar, Poitou mules and donkeys, Pyrenean Chamois to name but a few. La Forêt de Chizé is one of the few remaining areas of ancient forest that once covered much of France and Zoodyssée continues to work hard to preserve this environment and its native flora and fauna.

This is a lovely place to walk around, there are picnic and play areas, lovely woodland spaces with beautiful dappled shade.  A great day out for all ages.

Taxe de séjour

Since 1st January 2011, the French authorities have implemented a tax on holidaymakers to help fund local regional tourist agencies. This is called Taxe de séjour and is payable by every person staying in holiday accommodation for each night of their stay. There are exemptions for children under 13 years and discounts applied to families with three or more children. The maximum tax applied to guests staying with Gîtes in Charente is 30 centimes per night and it is our legal duty to collect this tax and pass it on to the regional tourist agency, in our case Pays Mellois. The scan of their correspondence below sets out our obligations:

We will advise guests of the Taxe séjour amount due for their stay either on booking or on arrival, if preferred. By way of an example, a seven night stay for a family of five, with two children under 13 and one of 15 equals 3 x €0.30 (since under 13s are exempt) – 30% (discount for families with three children) = €4.41 for the week. The Taxe de séjour must be paid in Euros before departure.

Kiss and chips...

Saturday, 29th October, saw the second Halloween party hosted by Amanda and Dave at Le Saint Martin bar/restaurant in Brux.  We were up for a laugh but what to go as?  Amanda mentioned that our friend Brett was thinking of going as Gene Simmons, the outrageous frontman of the band Kiss.  So, after a few beers one afternoon, we decided that Brett, his wife Donna, John and I would go as the whole band!

There was a great turnout, many in costumes and a mix of French and Brits.  Music was provided by The Funkey Soul Monkeys and a loud, fantastic night was had by all.  Amanda’s fish and chips were fabulous!

Here’s a selection of some of the party-goers!
